Texas church sorry for unauthorised Hamilton production with biblical rewrite

A Texas church has apologised to Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda for its unauthorised biblical rewrite of his hit musical.

The production by The Door McAllen Church rewrote the bawdier lyrics to reference Jesus, and added a scene where Alexander Hamilton repents.

It reportedly ended with a sermon inviting people "struggling" with alcohol, drugs or homosexuality to turn to God for forgiveness.

In a post to social media, church pastor Roman Gutierrez apologised for having "infringed on the rights and copyrights of many" and said the church would "pay damages for our actions".

"The Door Christian Fellowship McAllen Church did not ask for, or receive, a license from the producers or creators of Hamilton to produce, stage, replicate or alter any part of Hamilton; nor did we seek prior permission to alter Lin-Manuel Miranda's work by changing the music, the lyrics, deleting songs, and adding dialogue," he wrote.

"And it is never permissible to alter an artistic work such as Hamilton without legal permission.

"Our ministry will use this moment as a learning opportunity about protected artistic works and intellectual property."

He said the production would not be staged again, and the church would destroy all recordings, and request its members do the same.

The production, live streamed to the church's YouTube channel on August 5 and 6 and since taken down, swapped out Miranda's lyrics for tracts about redemption.

The line in Hercules Mulligan's rap "I heard ya mother say 'come again'" became "Your boy's spying for the government" and the line "Lock up your daughters and horses" was changed to "Lock up your secrets and horses".

In That Would Be Enough, sung to Hamilton by his wife Eliza, "I know who I married, so long as you come home at the end of the day, that would be enough" was changed to "My hope is in Jesus, if you could just give him a chance today, that would be enough".

In Miranda's hit, Hamilton asks: "What is a legacy? It's planting seeds in a garden you never get to see".

This was rewritten: "What is a legacy? It's knowing you repented and accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ that sets men free".

In the days after the live streaming, Miranda thanked "all of you who reached out about this illegal, unauthorised production" adding "now lawyers do their work".
