With the 2023 NFL draft just hours away, the Texans should know what they intend to do with the No. 2 pick. But during the week leading up to the big night, the franchise has been legitimately struggling with what player to select.
Houston has been “torn” this week on whether to pick a quarterback or an edge rusher with the second pick in the draft, a source told Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. The Texans have known they’ve had the No. 2 pick since the regular season ended on Jan. 8 and have gotten every opportunity to evaluate players since. But, there just hasn’t been a clear No. 2 with all signs pointing toward the Panthers selecting Alabama quarterback Bryce Young with the No. 1 pick on Thursday night.
Houston has both the No. 2 and No. 12 pick in the draft, further complicating their decision-making. An argument can be made for taking an edge rusher like the Crimson Tide’s Will Anderson Jr. or Texas Tech’s Tyree Wilson earlier because the talent at the position will take more of a considerable dip than at quarterback if they wait 10 more spots. The Texans need a signal-caller, and players like Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson are all favorites to go early.
According to an NFL Network report on April 4, Houston is targeting either Young or Stroud at the No. 2 pick. It’s impossible to say now, but all will be revealed Thursday at 8 p.m. ET.
