Texans TE Jordan Akins’ ‘good attitude’ led to being signed to active roster

Even though the Houston Texans are on a bye week, fresh off of their first victory of the season over divisional rival Jacksonville, general manager Nick Caserio is still making moves to help the team get better.

On Wednesday, the team signed tight end Jordan Akins from the practice squad to the active roster.

Akins, 30, was selected by the Houston Texans in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. After four seasons with the team, the former University of Central Florida tight end was released.

He was signed by the New York Giants in April 2022 but was cut in August after training camp.

The Texans brought him back to the team by signing him to their practice squad, and he has made the best of his opportunity by catching seven passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Houston had a decision to make with Akins after elevating him to the gameday roster for three games, which is the maximum amount of time a practice squad player can use.

Caserio decided after watching his performance on game days how professional he was during his short stint back with the Texans.

“Jordan has returned, and had a good attitude,” said Caserio when asked about the roster move during his press conference on Tuesday. “When a player leaves and comes back, you’re not really sure how that’s going to go, but Jordan has done a good job, had a good attitude. He’s taken advantage of his opportunities when he’s played. [Tight ends coach] Berb (Tim Berbenich) has done a good job with him. It’s been good to have Akins back in the building. Jordan has done a good job with his opportunities.”

The Texans will resume practice on Monday as they prepare to travel and take on the Las Vegas Raiders.
