Texans QB Davis Mills cites ‘simple execution’ as missing component in passing game

The Houston Texans had some splash plays against the Indianapolis Colts in their 20-20 tie in Week 1 at NRG Stadium.

Quarterback Davis Mills completed 23-of-37 for 240 yards and two touchdowns with a 98.9 passer rating. However, there were still some plays left on the field that impacted the Texans’ 5-of-13 third down efficiency and kept the team at just 299 total yards.

Mills doesn’t think the solution to elevating the passing game is too complicated.

“I think simple execution,” Mills told reporters after the game. “We’ve got to be on the same page with my receivers. Sometimes I thought I could have been held onto the ball a little bit longer. The offensive line for the most part of the game did a really good job protecting their guys. I had time all night. Just simple execution that we can continue to work on and stress.”

According to Mills, the Texans are “close” in an overall sense, and the results, while still needing improvement, need to be compared to what the Colts were able to do them a season ago.

“That was a football team that practically shut us out two times last year, and I thought we played well the whole night,” said Mills. “Defense and special teams played well. Offense, we did some really good things. But the result shows. We’ve got a lot to work on, and we’re ready for it.”

The Texans will get back to work as they prepare for the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High. The Week 2 bout represents a chance for Houston to get their first win and also get their passing game on another level.
