The Houston Texans pulled off the trifecta of Pro Football Writers of America awards this season. After rookies C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson Jr. won Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year, the PFWA named DeMeco Ryans as the 2023 Coach of the Year.

The Texans won the AFC South division title in his Ryans’ season at the helm before he led them to a wild card victory over the Cleveland Browns. Ryans played an instrumental role in the development of Stroud and Anderson as instant contributors and hired a solid staff as well with offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and defensive coordinator Matt Burke. Slowik, as well as quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson, could even find promotions this offseason on other teams.
Ryans also won the PFWA and NFL Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2022.
Now, this award isn’t always an indication that Ryans will win the equivalent Coach of the Year award, but the PFWA winners this past season lined up with the NFL award winners as well. Ryans is one of the five finalists who could win the award, alongside Dan Campbell (Detroit Lions), John Harbaugh (Baltimore Ravens), Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco 49ers) and Kevin Stefanski (Browns).
The winners of this award will be announced alongside the rest of the awards on Feb. 8.
