Texans HC DeMeco Ryans says he’s rooting for 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII

DeMeco Ryans still wants his old team to win. The Houston Texans head coach didn’t try to hide that he will be cheering for the San Francisco 49ers to win Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs when asked.

“I’m pulling for them. This is their year,” Ryans said, via NBC Sports. “… They’re destined to get it done this year.”

Ryans has a personal attachment to the 49ers after he spent the past six season in San Francisco. He was the on sidelines as the team’s inside linebackers coach the last time the 49ers played the Chiefs in the Super Bowl in 2019 and was the defensive coordinator in the teams’ previous two failed bids to win the NFC championship in 2021 and 2022.

The 49ers finally got over the hump in 2023 after a fourth-quarter comeback over the Detroit Lions. Now, they’ll just have to beat the team they lost to four years ago to take home the Lombardi Trophy. Meanwhile, Ryans led the Texans to the AFC South title in his first season at the helm before a huge wild card win over the Cleveland Browns. Houston couldn’t beat the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC divisional round, though.

The Texans won’t play the 49ers in 2024, so the only way Ryans would get to face his old club would be in the Super Bowl.
