Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio is pleased DeMeco Ryans is returning to the AFC South club that started his NFL career.
Caserio released a statement through the Texans on Jan. 31 that welcomed Ryans and his family back to Houston, and elaborated on the good qualities that the former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator brings to the Texans.
“DeMeco is a proven coach with a track record of success who has an innate ability to lead people,” Caserio said. “He is progressive in his vision, a great communicator, a connector and somebody that values collaboration.”
The 49ers made the playoffs in each of the past two seasons that Ryans has been the defensive coordinator. San Francisco finished tied for ninth in points allowed and third in total defense in 2021. In Ryans’ final season, San Francisco was first in points allowed and second in total defense.
Caserio believes that Ryans will be a part of the liftoff the team has been looking for since the beginning of the 2021 offseason.
Said Caserio: “We are working to build a sustainable program that has long-term success and DeMeco is the coach we feel is the best fit to help us achieve our goals. We know how important it is to get results now and we have a lot of work to do, but I’m excited to partner with DeMeco to build our football team together.”
Ryans is the youngest coach in team history at 38 years old. The Texans are also hiring their first former player as coach. Ryans is the third full-time coach in team history to come from a defensive background. The other two were Dom Capers (2002-05) and Lovie Smith (2022).
