Texans GM Nick Caserio meets with Will Anderson at NFL combine

INDIANAPOLIS — The Houston Texans aren’t pigeonholing themselves at quarterback at No. 2 overall, even if it may be their biggest need on the roster.

Alabama edge defender Will Anderson is also in their sights.

Anderson told reporters at the NFL combine Wednesday that he had a meeting with Texans general manager Nick Caserio.

The Texans could also use help at edge defender. Houston has not had a double-digit sack defender since 2018 when J.J. Watt had 16.0. The Texans also have their best defensive end in Jonathan Greenard set to enter the final year of his rookie contract. Adding Anderson would give the Texans an upgrade as Anderson gradually took the mantle away from Greenard.

Meeting with Anderson may also be part of the due diligence the Texans undertake each offseason as part of their draft preparation.

“Most teams wherever they pick you probably have three or four guys that you would feel comfortable taking,” Caserio said on Feb. 28. “If a team is in front of you and you’re only talking about one player, then it’s going to leave two to three other players. So, you’re either comfortable with that group of players or you’re not. Again, you can’t really get too caught up in what other teams are doing. You just try to make decisions that you feel are best for your team and your situation.”

If the Texans miss out on Bryce Young because another team made a deal with the Chicago Bears to pick No. 1 overall, and Houston is not sold on the other signal callers at No. 2 overall for that type of value, and trading back into the first round isn’t an option, then taking Anderson might be the only option worth its value.
