The Dallas Cowboys’ run to the postseason is over.
Ezekiel Elliott’s run for the Lombardi Trophy is just getting started. And it’s kickoffs down Interstate 45 at NRG Stadium.
The Los Angeles Chargers are signing the veteran running back to their practice squad following his release from the Cowboys earlier this week. He’s expected to practice before the Bolts make a decision on his status for the wild-card round against the Houston Texans.

While Elliott might no longer be the All-Pro runner who led the league in rushing two while donning the iconic star, he still provides value as a depth piece. Last season behind Rico Dowdle, Elliott finished with 74 carries for 226 yards with 3.1 yards per run and three touchdowns.
Los Angeles (11-6) has faith in J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards as its top options, but both have missed time due to injury. Dobbins came off the injured reserve earlier this month for the regular-season finale after missing four games.
Edwards hasn’t played since Week 16 and could be limited due to a lingering ankle injury.

If Elliott, who ranks third all-time in Cowboys’ history for rushing, can get up to speed, perhaps there’s a limited role for him inside the red zone. Los Angeles’ offense ranks top 10 in passing and is built around the air attack from Justin Herbert, but having a second punch makes the difference in a winner-take-all bout.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT at NRG Stadium.
