Texans coach Lovie Smith says rookie CB Derek Stingley is ‘ready to go’

The Houston Texans took a risk drafting Derek Stingley with the No. 3 overall pick, but it appears they will reap the rewards Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Coach Lovie Smith met with reporters after practice Monday and declared the former LSU cornerback, who played just three games in 2021 due to a Lisfranc injury, will be available against the Colts at NRG Stadium.

“We all have to have a first time at everything,” Smith said. “You’re excited about the first time. I’m sure those are the thoughts going through Derek’s mind. As his coach, what I’ve seen him do, he’s smart. He knows football. He’s healthy. He’s ready to go. It’s safe to say he’s going to play this week.”

Stingley saw action throughout the preseason as the Texans ramped up their rookie defensive back’s availability.

“I’m excited about seeing him play,” said Smith. “Again, as a rookie, you’re going to continue to get better each week, but he’ll be ready to go.”
