Texans coach DeMeco Ryans credits mental preparation for C.J. Stroud’s level of play

C.J. Stroud doesn’t look like a rookie.

The No. 2 overall pick has already found his way into the top-10 of passing categories typically reserved for veterans. The Houston Texans’ 3-3 record and elevate status past the rebuild phase is due to Stroud’s strong play.

Coach DeMeco Ryans believes the reason behind Stroud’s mature play that has been a steady, guiding presence for the Texans is due to his preparation.

“Yeah, why C.J. has success — I think it starts with his mental preparation,” Ryans said. “He’s really dedicated to the process of studying, making sure he’s prepared when he goes into games.”

While Stroud has done his part to ensure his mind is in the game, Ryans notes that the supporting cast from offensive linemen to receivers, tight ends, and running backs have also put in the work to be on the same page.

“He’s also had success because I think the guys around him have all gelled well together,” said Ryans. “They play well together, so it just starts with the mental preparation for him, which he’s off the charts.”

The Texans could use another dose of Stroud’s off-the-charts mental preparation as they take on the Carolina Panthers Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time from Bank of America Stadium.
