Tess Daly's sweet gesture for Vernon Kay as he launched his new BBC Radio 2 show

Tess Daly threw her support behind her husband Vernon Kay as he launched his first official BBC Radio 2 show. The presenter has taken over the reigns from Ken Bruce who left the broadcaster in March to join Greatest Hits Radio.

Ken, who had hosted the show since 1992, announced he was leaving BBC Radio 2 in January, shortly after the show announced Vernon would be taking his place. Ahead of his debut on Monday, May 15, Vernon told BBC Breakfast he was "very, very excited".

He added: "The BBC Radio 2 audience are very faithful and nothing has changed apart from the voice behind the microphone and I can't wait to get started at 9.30 on the dot."

Asked if he was nervous, Vernon replied: "It's only talking, it's a skill the majority of us were born with. I think it's that connection with the audience, the bond that you have, fingers crossed people will stay with us."

And ahead of his big gig, Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess, who has been married to Vernon since 2003, revealed she'd packed two good luck bananas in his bag. Taking to Instagram, Tess wrote: "Prepared a little good luck for @vernonkay on his first day today! Good luck on @bbcradio2."

One banana had writing on it that read: "You're ace," while another said: "We love you," with a black love heart.

Ken's last show, after 31 years of presenting on BBC Radio 2, was on Friday, March 3, you can read more on this here. Gary Davies has been filling in until Vernon officially took over over on Monday, May 15.

Kay's show will feature the daily music quiz Ten To The Top, Tracks Of My Years, the Record and Album Of The Week, and performances from the Radio 2 Piano Room. For more showbiz and television stories get our newsletter here.
