The launch of Tesla, Inc.‘s (NASDAQ:TSLA) Cybertruck is long overdue and the latest updates from the company and CEO Elon Musk suggest the electric pickup truck could commercially launch anytime soon.
Tesla’s official X handle shared a livestreaming of an off-road Cybertruck in Baja California, which is a state in northwest Mexico. The livestreaming was done via Musk-owned SpaceX unit Starlink’s satellite service.
Musk also posted the video on his handle on X, formerly Twitter.
“Cybertruck in Baja,” said Musk on X.
Reflecting the frenzied interest in the EV, the live streaming was watched by 1.4 million viewers, going by the data shared on the 7.30-minute video clip shared by Tesla. The post shared by Musk has garnered 5.2 million views, roughly 40,000 likes, and over 4,500 reposts.
The Cybertruck is expected to enter the EV truck market by 2024. It will compete with the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, GMC HummerEV, and the incoming Chevrolet Silverado EV. The GMC Sierra Denali EV will enter the market in the same time as the Silverado EV. The Ram 1500 REV is projected to enter in 2025.
Tesla has dominated the EV market since the early 2010 with the selling of Model S. The Model 3 was made to be access for middle-income buyers.
Mexico is key in Tesla’s scheme of things as the company is setting up its sixth Gigafactory south of the Texas border in the Mexican state of Nuevo León.
Baja is situated on a peninsula that separates the Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of California and the peninsula has four major desert areas. The voiceover for the live stream said the track is one of the most challenging routes in the world.
Commenting on the video, a Tesla influencer pointed out that he called out Baja testing in March.
“Air-suspension standard. They have tested it for Baja style terrain/racing. I asked if they have jumped it and staff said they have tested it fully and have no fear it won’t hold up,” said Matthew Donegan-Ryan, a Tesla owner on X.
The Cybertruck was spotted earlier this year in New Zealand where it underwent winter testing. The newest EV from Tesla’s stable is expected to lift the company’s volume growth, which is the need of the hour as the company’s recent price cuts have proved inelastic and have not done much good for volume.
