Tesco to close eight in-store pharmacies this year as part of huge shake-up

Tesco will be closing its eight in-store pharmacies from August this year.

The eight pharmacies which are said to be affected are the supermarket's 100-hour locations that are not seeing enough to justify their long opening hours.

Tesco has not yet confirmed the affected sites - we will update this article once we know more.

The supermarket chain told the Chemist and Druggist (C&D) magazine that it was helping customers using the affected pharmacies to move their prescriptions to others nearby.

It's reported that customers impacted by the changes are to be told ahead of any closures.

The branches set for closure will continue to sell generic over-the-counter medicines in the main store.

Tesco announced in January that was to introduce a raft of changes to the business in order to “remain focused and competitive in a fast-changing market”.

This included shutting the remaining counters and hot delis, shaking up its management team and closing in-store pharmacies.

At the time, Tesco said the sites at risk of closure were those which had other pharmacies "within one mile of our store" reports C&D magazine.

Tesco has said that its pharmacy staff made up a small proportion of those affected by its overall plans.

The chain also reportedly said it would work hard to find roles for affected pharmacy staff in nearby Tesco branches.

In 2022, Tesco had around 370 pharmacies across the UK which as well as offer health advice can offer other services as well such as flu jabs, NHS blood pressure checks and type 2 diabetes risk assessments.

You can find your nearest Tesco pharmacy using its locator tool on its website.

This is not the first raft of supermarket pharmacy closure, as LloydsPharmacy announces it was to close its 237 Sainsbury's branches this year.

LloydsPharmacy blamed the cuts to its services on “changing market conditions”.

The pharmacy chain did not reveal how many pharmacy workers the removals will affect.

Asda also announced earlier this year it was to close seven of its 254 in store pharmacies.

The seven affected pharmacies are expected to close by the end of this month.

The Mirror has contacted Tesco for comment.
