Tesco shoppers are only just learning how to unlock supermarket trolleys without £1 coin

As most people go cashless in their everyday lives thanks to contactless payment - what happens when you end up at the supermarket not quite having enough change to unlock a trolley? It perhaps is the most gruelling part about shoppinsg - namely, to find the dreaded £1 coin.

However, a supermarket shopper has shared a nifty hack on how to unlock trolleys without a £1 coin and it's blowing people's minds, reports The Mirror. Taking to popular video-streaming service TikTok to share her satisfying tip, Tasha's video has surpassed 1.4 million views since posting.

Captioning the post, she wrote: "When some lady shows you this at Tesco, how am I only just learning this?" Tasha's trick is extremely straightforward and while you won't need a pound coin, you will still need some other change.

In the clip, the TikToker demonstrated how to unlock the trolley as she held two 20p coins in hand. Placing them in the slot for the £1 coin, she stacked the change on top of one another and lo and behold, it worked just as well as the normal coin would.

Pushing the 20ps into the money compartment, the trolley was released and away Tasha walked away to start her shopping. Flocking to the comments, users were gobsmacked by the revelation and explained that their supermarket trips have forever changed.

"Fabulous," one gushed, while second added: "Wow." One person claimed they always swear by the hack, saying: "Me and my husband always do this."

On the other hand, users were keen to share their alternative methods that work for retrieving the trolleys without even having to use coins. One person claimed: "A pin works too! used to work at Farmfoods and our badges if inserted right while pushing it in unlocks it."

"Can also you use a house key," a second suggested. A third wrote: "Use a hair grip open it up and slide on side into the part where the chain attaches to the trolley till you hear it click and then pull the chain out."
