Tesco scraps paper Clubcard statements and vouchers for many shoppers

Tesco is scrapping paper Clubcard statements and vouchers for many customers.

The supermarket giant's loyalty scheme shake-up will be introduced in May and automatic statements and vouchers will only be posted out to customers who makes a specific request for physical coupons. Accumulated points will be transferred into vouchers over email, with a barcode for shoppers to scan at checkouts.

Tesco told The Mirror it will make the change automatically for regular online shoppers, who will get an email informing them about the changes. Shoppers who want carry on receiving quarterly statements and vouchers through their letter boxes can do this by signing into their MyClubcard account online, clicking on 'statement preferences' and changing it back to 'by post' by May 5.

It comes after Tesco is set out plans to open 14 Express stores and 59 new branches over the next 12 months. Chief executive Ken Murphy said the plan will take it to a total of over 2,000 Express stores and 1,001 shops.

Our priority is to be the most convenient retailer,” said Mr Murphy. “That means serving customers wherever, whenever and however they want. No matter where our customers live, or how they shop.”

Tesco recently announced it was to pay out nearly £50m in ‘thank you bonuses’ to workers. Up to 290,000 shop staff, call centre and warehouse workers at Tesco are being awarded a bonus as a special thank you for their efforts over the past year, the retailer has announced.

The group said the payout “recognises the way colleagues really stepped up to the industry challenges of the last year” and comes as it reported annual profits more than trebling to over £2 billion. The bonus is the latest cheer for Tesco workers, after the supermarket giant – the UK’s largest private employer – announced last week that it was hiking pay to over £10 an hour.

It said it was increasing hourly pay for shop staff and warehouse workers by 5.8% from £9.55 to £10.10 from July 24. The move comes after a raft of supermarket rivals, including Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Lidl and Aldi, increased their rate of basic pay in the face of the cost-of-living crisis. Tesco also confirmed that it is increasing the hourly rate for its customer delivery drivers and click & collect assistants to £11 from July.
