Tesco removes 'essential item' from shelves as supermarket issues important update

Tesco have sparked concern over the shortage of one crucial ingredient to festive home cooking.

Cornflour is an all-purpose ingredient used to thicken gravies, make biscuits and all-round improve many home-cooked dishes, reports the Telegraph.

But now there are fears it could disappear from store shelves forever, after the supermarket giant announced it was no longer selling the product as a result of “low customer demand”.

The news came after one peeved customer posted on social media to ask the company why they were no longer stocking cornflour.

A spokesman for Tesco responded by saying: “Cornflour has been discontinued because of low customer demand I'm afraid.”

This has prompted anger across the board on social media, with many saying that although they didn't buy the product more than once each six months, it was still an essential to their cupboard stock.

When asked to clarify whether this remark was true, Tesco claimed they had not completely delisted cornflour and would attempt to improve availability across its stores.

Used primarily as a thickening agent in most liquid-based foods like soup, casseroles, stews and gravies, cornflour is a staple in most households.

None of the other big six supermarkets have noted a shortage of cornflour, but with the customer demand not being high, it is an essential item to secure before Christmas.
