Tesco recalls chicken product unsafe to eat due to use-by date error

Tesco has said you don’t need a receipt to return the chicken - (Joe Giddens / PA)

Tesco has issued an urgent recall notice for one of its Christmas party food products.

Some batches of the supermarket’s Chicken Tsukune Skewers have been mislabelled with a use by date of 23/12/2024 instead of 10/12/2024, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said.

As a result, Tesco is recalling all packages of the party food with the December 23 expiry date.

The recall notice states: “An extension of the Use by Date could pose a risk to health if the product is kept past the correct shelf life of the product.”

Customers who have bought any of the skewers are advised to return them to any Tesco store for a full refund – and no receipt is required.

Eating out-of-date chicken carries numerous health risks and the FSA advises people to “never eat food after the use-by date, even if it looks and smells ok, as it could make you very ill”.

“You can eat food until midnight on the use-by date shown on a product, but not after, unless the food has been cooked or frozen,” its website adds.

The ‘sniff test’ – recommended to see if food with a best-before date can be eaten – is not suitable for food products with a use-by date.

The latest recall comes just weeks after Tesco issued an alert about its 200g Tzatziki Dip, after salmonella was found in some batches of the product during routine testing.
