Brits have found a new reason to feel nostalgic for noughties culture; It was the golden age of supermarket shopping.
Looking back is possibly a much-needed tonic (or another reason to feel depressed), with grocery price inflation recently hitting 3.3 per cent, which was actually down from 3.7 per cent in December – the highest rate since last March.
The British Retail Consortium has said it expects food inflation to rise further and hit four per cent by the second half of the year amid geopolitical tensions and the imminent £7bn increase in costs from the autumn budget.
Their data shows that food prices have risen at their third-fastest monthly rate in a year amid hikes in the cost of butter, cheese, eggs and bread.
The consortium’s chief executive, Helen Dickinso,n said: “Breakfast, in particular, got more expensive as butter, cheese, eggs, bread and cereals all saw price hikes. Climbing global coffee prices could threaten to push the morning costs higher in the coming months.”
Against this backdrop, some social media users have shared videos of discontinued or rebranded Tesco products from the 2000s, leaving many yearning for the supermarket’s budget-friendly prices.
