Tesco offers shoppers the chance to become the new voice of its self-service checkouts

Tesco is bringing something new to its self-service checkouts in November with a new competition offering one person a fun opportunity - and a unique claim to fame.

The supermarket will give one customer a starring role in its stores: becoming the new voice of its self-checkout machines. The winner will be chosen to read lines including “Please check my bagging area” and “Clubcard accepted”.

Shoppers can audition for the job by posting their best attempt on TikTok using the hashtag #TescoVoiceOfCheckout, MyLondon reports . Any budding voiceover artists out there will need to head to Tesco’s TikTok page and use the duet feature on the video, with thousands already trying out their hand at the famous phrases.

The winner will receive 10,000 Clubcard points with a value of £100 to spend in store or online, as well as having the honour of their voice being played at self-checkout stores in Tescos across the UK for a few weeks from November. With Tesco’s TikTok video racking up almost five million views, many followers have suggested giving the checkouts regional accents inspired by their location.

One person said that Liverpool-based stores should have a Scouse voice saying: “Calm down, calm down, someone’s on the way to help.” Others have put forward how the phrases could differ in a Scottish, Yorkshire, Cockney - and, of course, Geordie accent.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We're thrilled to have launched on TikTok. It’s really important to us that everything we do is distinctly Tesco and native to TikTok at the same time.

“Giving customers the chance to become the voice of our checkouts and £100 of Clubcard points feels like a great balance of helpful, rewarding, fun and engaging content. We can’t wait to see how creative our customers get!”
