Tesco has been found to have made the biggest cuts to petrol and diesel prices at its forecourts, according to a recent price comparison.
It comes as major supermarkets across the country have began cutting the prices of their fuel after they were criticised for not giving drivers a fair deal by keeping prices high, reports The Mirror.
The cost of fuel hit record-high levels this year and drivers are still continuing to pay more than they were at the start of the year, despite prices beginning to fall in recent weeks.
According to the RAC figures, the cost of petrol currently sits at 180.70p per litre, while the cost of diesel is at 190.75p per litre.
Almost £5 has been shaved off the cost of a 55-litre tank of petrol in recent weeks. Drivers were paying 145p for petrol on average at the start of January, while diesel stood at roughly 148p.
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “Following seven consecutive weeks of wholesale prices falling, we’re relieved to see the supermarkets finally reducing their prices a little. Sadly though, the UK’s biggest fuel retailers aren’t cutting their prices at the scale they should be."
Here's how the supermarkets compare.
Tesco
Tesco has made the largest cut to the price of fuel, cutting the price of petrol by 6.5p and diesel by 4.5p. The cuts have taken place across Tesco's 600 filling stations .
Asda
Asda was the first supermarket to announce a cut last Friday. It has cut the price of unleaded by 5p and diesel by 3p across its 323 UK petrol stations.
The supermarket says this means drivers pay on average 174p for unleaded and 185p for diesel when filling up their tanks.
Sainsbury's
The store introduced its cuts in two stages last week in line with Asda by an average of 5p. Victoria Newman, head of corporate communications for Sainsbury's, said: “We are committed to offering motorists great value and over the weekend we lowered the price of petrol and diesel across our forecourts.
Morrisons
While Morrisons has confirmed that it has been cutting fuel prices across its 300 petrol petrol stations, it has refused to disclose the exact extent of the discount it is applying.
Co-op
Co-op has cut its prices by 2p across its 133 filling stations nationwide. You can use apps like Fuel Genie to find your nearest petrol stations.
