Tesco issues message to motorists as petrol prices continue to fall

Tesco has issued a message to motorists as fuel prices at the pumps continue to fall across the country. After Asda slashed its prices at their stations in recent days, prices were again cut on Monday, August 1.

The price of unleaded fell by an average of 6.5p and the price of diesel dropped by an average of 4.5p. The cost of living crisis has been taking its toll on millions of families throughout the UK, and Tesco chiefs have said that they hope the move will alleviate some of the pressure, reports Leicestershire Live.

Tesco Chief Product Officer Ashwin Prasad commented: "We know how tough rising fuel bills have been for households across the UK, and so we hope that these price cuts will go some way to help - particularly as more families head out on their summer holidays this week."

Savvy shoppers looking for ways to spend even less can use their Clubcard vouchers to get money off at Tesco and selected petrol stations, with the retailer allowing shoppers to both earn points and use their vouchers at the pump for money off the final bill, as seen in Leicestershire Live.

Asda has announced it has cut fuel prices, too. Asda said on Friday that it has cut the cost of unleaded by 5p per litre and diesel by 3p per litre.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said Asda cutting its prices to an average of 174p per litre for unleaded and 185p per litre for diesel should now cause other retailers to reduce their prices. However, he criticised the move for being "too late" because motorists have been losing out for weeks.

He said: "This is good news for drivers as it will cause other retailers to reduce their prices, but it comes too late as the wholesale price of petrol has fallen significantly over the last seven weeks. This means hard-pressed motorists have been losing out while retailers enjoyed 20p-a-litre margins - much higher than normal."

AA fuel price spokesman Luke Bosdet said: "Asda's price move is impressive, in effect cutting 10p a litre off the UK average price of petrol. That's potentially a fiver off a tank for those filling up this weekend, compared to the artificially high prices on too many major retailer forecourts and in too many towns."
