Tesco confirms popular Clubcard feature will be scrapped

Tesco has announced it will scrap its pay-in-store feature from its Clubcard app, leaving many shoppers needing to pay by alternative means.

The supermarket has said that customers will no longer be able to pay using the system, with the feature being “phased out” by March 7.

Many shoppers have paid by opening the app and selecting ‘pay in store’, allowing them to pay via a linked card while also earning Clubcard points. But they are set to find the feature, previously known as Tesco Pay+, will not work over the coming weeks.

It means that holders will have to scan their Clubcard and then pay either by cash or a bank card separately.

An email sent to customers read: “To ensure we’re able to keep bringing out the best value and convenience, we’ve taken the decision to remove the pay in-store feature from the Tesco app.

“Between now and March 7, the pay in-store feature will be phased out and any linked card details will be removed, unless you’re using them for GetGo, Whoosh, or home delivery shopping.

“You can still earn points and access Clubcard Prices by simply scanning your Clubcard or app at the till.”

Customers have taken to Reddit to express their frustration with the move.

How to make the most of your Tesco Clubcard

  • Get your petrol at Tesco or Esso.
  • Sign up to Clubcard Pay+ - a pre-paid Tesco Bank debit card which allows you to earn points even when you don’t shop at Tesco.
  • Make sure to look out for the yellow label in Tesco which reveal the Clubcard price.
  • Switch your mobile service provider to Tesco Mobile.
  • Make sure you spend your points within two years or they expire.

One wrote: ”So annoying. How is it more convenient to turn what was one step, into two. Can't see how it’s going to help with value either.”

Another added: “Use it daily.. it’s pretty convenient to me, no need to scan Clubcard.. just pay with the app, quite a strange move from Tesco.”

The news comes following Tesco staff being banned from wearing headphones on the shop floor.

The move in the supermarket giant’s updated uniform policy requires staff to not wear headphones while in customer-facing areas on the shop floor. Although previously part of the supermarket’s health and safety policy, the requirement is now included in the uniform policy. The change came amid declining customer satisfaction scores at the chain, according to an independent industry body.

Last month, Tesco was urged to drop an “unethical” trial involving Danone-funded midwives offering advice to customers on feeding infants.

A Tesco spokesman said: “This small-scale pilot in one store was designed to offer additional support to parents and carers through free and impartial advice, as part of a wider concept offering a range of health and wellbeing services.”
