Tesco and Sainsbury's join Aldi and M&S in nationwide ban of disposable barbecues

Tesco and Sainsbury's have become the latest major supermarkets to completely ban the sale of disposable barbecues in all of their stores across the country.

It comes just after the news that M&S pulled the summer item from their store to help "reduce the risk of fires." Both Aldi and Waitrose also made the same decision back in March this year. Major retailers began pulling the disposable product from store shelves following the UK's first major heatwave this year which caused dry conditions and concerns over wildfires.

As temperatures continue to soar, Tesco have made the decision to temporarily remove all disposable barbecues until the weather permits, reports The Manchester Evening News.

On the other hand, Sainsbury's have said they are removing the item as a precautionary measure and have not confirmed when, or if, they will restock the product.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury's said: "As a precautionary measure we are removing from sale all disposable barbecues until further notice. Safety is our highest priority and we have made this decision due to the hot and dry weather that we are currently experiencing across the country."

Both Morrisons and The Co-op also made a similar move, as they have confirmed they will not sell disposable BBQ's close to national parks in a bid to reduce fires. London's Fire Commissioner Andy Roe says: "Despite our grass fire warnings, we've still seen some people behaving carelessly and recklessly. We need urgent action now to see a national ban on the sale of disposable barbecues.

"They can be bought for as little as £5 and can cause untold damage. Especially when the grass is as dry as it has been over the last few weeks."
