Football icon Terry Venables, who passed away in 2023 after a long illness, has left behind a legacy both on and off the pitch — including a £3.3 million inheritance for his beloved wife, Yvette. The former England manager, fondly known as ‘El Tel,’ died at the age of 80, and now, details of his will have shed light on the fortune he left behind.
Public probate records revealed this week show that Venables’ estate was worth an impressive £4,765,370. After debts and expenses were settled, the net estate stood at £3,289,952 — all of which was left to Yvette, his wife and lifelong partner. The will, written six years before his death, named her as the sole beneficiary.
Venables was more than just a football manager. A true legend of the game, he made his mark both as a player and as a coach. On the pitch, he turned out for Chelsea, Tottenham, and QPR, before transitioning to management with remarkable success. He led Barcelona to a La Liga title and brought the FA Cup home with Spurs in 1991. But it was his leadership of England during Euro 96 that cemented his place in the hearts of the nation. Under his guidance, the Three Lions reached the semi-finals, only to fall to Germany in a heartbreaking penalty shootout.
Tributes have been flooding in since his passing, with former players and colleagues praising not just his footballing genius, but his personality and charm.
Gary Lineker, who played under Venables at both Barcelona and Tottenham, shared an emotional tribute on social media. “Devastated to hear that Terry Venables has died,” he wrote. “The best, most innovative coach that I had the privilege and pleasure of playing for. He was much more, though, than just a great manager, he was vibrant, he was charming, he was witty, he was a friend.”
Lineker, who made 143 appearances and scored 66 goals under Venables’ management, also credited him for being a major influence during his most successful years in football.
Gareth Southgate, the current England manager and one of Venables’ former players, also spoke out following the news. “Any player will have great affinity with the manager that gave them their opportunity,” he said, “but it was quickly evident playing for Terry Venables that he was an outstanding coach and manager.”
Southgate continued: “He was open minded, forward thinking, enjoyed life to the full and created a brilliant environment with England that allowed his players to flourish and have one of the most memorable tournaments in England history.”
“A brilliant man, who made people feel special,” Southgate added. “I’m very sad to hear of his passing and my thoughts are with Yvette and all of his family.”
Though he may be gone, Venables’ influence on English football — and the lives of those he inspired — remains as powerful as ever.
