A suspected terror module was busted by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on Wednesday (July 19). Five persons who were allegedly planning to carry out subversive activities in and around the city were arrested.
Syed Suhel Khan, 24, Mohammed Umar, 29, Jahid Tabarej, 25, Syed Mudasir Pasha, 28, and Mahammed Fizal Rabbani, 30, were nabbed in Sultanpalya in R.T. Nagar where they had gathered at the house of Suhel for a meeting.
Plan hatched in jail
According to the police, the suspects had been arrested in 2017 in a murder case, and while in the Central Prison, they met the 2008 serial blast terror suspects and hatched a plan to carry out blasts in the city. After coming out on bail, they started executing the plan, and gathered arms, ammunition and explosive substances.
Based on a tip-off from central agencies, CCB officials kept a tab and arrested them, S.D. Sharanappa, Joint Commissioner of Police, said.
Ammunition recovered
The CCB officials recovered seven country-made pistols, 42 rounds of ammunition, two phones, and several SIM cards from them. They had allegedly conducted a series of meetings and were involved in other activities besides collecting arms and ammunition, which the police are probing. The police have also sent the seized mobile phones to the FSL to retrieve the data to know about their network and links.
The suspects have been taken into custody for seven days for further investigation, and efforts are on to track down others who are possibly involved in the case.
They have been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Arms Act, and Section 121 (Waging war against India) and were produced before the special court and taken into custody for detailed questioning.
