A journalist speaking on Morning Ireland from Ukraine this morning was interrupted when a gun was pointed at him.
Listeners of the RTE radio show were left in shock as the reporter said he had to stop the interview because someone was shouting at him with a gun.
The British journalist was reporting live from Kyiv as Russian troops make their way towards the capital city.
Mr Sweeney was speaking to RTE presenter Gavin Jennings when suddenly a soldier approached him and pointed a gun, forcing the journalist to quickly hang up the phone.
The interview ended suddenly as Mr Sweeney said: "‘There’s a guy shouting at me with a gun.. I have to go. Bye."
Several people voiced their concern for Mr Sweeney's safety after listening to his report.
One person said on Twitter: "Listening to @johnsweeneyroar on @morningireland and he had to end the transmission because a soldier with a gun was shouting at him. Hope you're okay John!"
A second said: "'There’s a guy shouting at me with a gun, I gotta go' - journalist @johnsweeneyroar on @morningireland just now."
A third commented: "'There’s a guy shouting at me with a gun, I have to go, bye' - @johnsweeneyroar signing off his interview on @morningireland suddenly. Scary enough. Hope he’s okay."
Thankfully a few minutes later Mr Sweeney returned back on air and told listeners about the incident.
He explained: "There’s lots of militia on the streets...I almost got arrested as a Russian spy. It’s a little bit paranoid, but it’s ok. You can talk your way through, but I had to deal with the guy so I had to say goodbye quickly."
Earlier Mr Sweeney had been telling Irish listeners about the attack on the TV tower in Kyiv which was hit by missiles. He was brought to the tower by soldiers and described horrific scenes.
"There was blood on the ground where one of the civilian workers of the TV transmitter had been hit," described Mr Sweeney.
"Across the street there had been another missile attack that had killed four civilians. I could see the corpse of a dead man and the corpse of a child, " he said.
"So Vladimir Putin is killing women and children on the streets of Kyiv as we speak."
