Terrifying footage shows car reverse at high speed across road before smashing into optician's in Gorseinon

CCTV footage has captured the moment a car was reversed at high speed into an opticians in Swansea.

Cameras recorded the car approaching from Brighton Road before crossing the High Street in Gorseinon and crashing straight through the metal railings separating the road from the pavement. The car then smashed into the shop front of Gorseinon Eye Centre before coming to rest inside.

Opticians owner David Griffiths reviewed the footage the following morning after arriving to find his shop front completely destroyed following the incident on Friday, March 18. You can get more Swansea news and other story updates by subscribing to our newsletters here.

Cameras from the shop also captured the crash, which happened just before 11pm on Friday night, from inside. Headlights can be seen approaching the premises before the four-door car shatters the doorway and windows. The shop display was also sent flying although the front desk somehow stays intact.

Another parked vehicle was buffeted out of the way as the car mounted the pavement. At least one person can then be seen exiting the car from the front passenger seat before then running off.

South Wales Police arrived at the scene following reports of a car having reversed into premises in High Street at 10.52pm. Two teenage girls were later arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking in connection with the incident A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old were both taken into police custody overnight but have since been released under investigation. The younger girl was also arrested on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle when her alcohol level was above the limit.

Mr Griffiths, said it was lucky no-one was hurt during the late night incident, adding: "It was really lucky no-one was behind it because they would have died." He said the car was towed away on Saturday morning and work was undertaken to board up the smashed shop.
