A mum-of four has been too scared to sleep after capturing a chilling image of a ghost leaving her bedroom in the middle of the night. Amanda Pitt, 34, was asleep in her basement when she heard footsteps on the stairs to the kitchen, which she initially assumed it was one of her children.
When Amanda checked on them, they were all sleeping soundly in their bedrooms so she went back to bed, only to be woken once again by more "heavy footsteps". At 3.40am, the scared mum looked at her security cameras and saw a shadowy figure standing in the doorway of the kitchen.
Thinking that someone had broken in, Amanda woke her husband Jeffrey Pitt, 34, who sprang up to see if there was an intruder but found the house empty except for the sleeping family.
No signs of a break-in were found and nobody else had seen the figure but Ollie, the family's English Shepherd, appeared to be scared and was pacing up and down the kitchen.
The incident on October 21 shook Amanda up so much she was unable to get back to sleep that night and turned on the TV to calm her down.
Now Amanda says providing the spook doesn't cause any harm, the family will "live with it" until they're able to move.
Amanda, from York County, Pennsylvania, US, said: "At about 3.40 in the morning I heard heavy walking up the stairs into the living room and then into the kitchen.
"I made sure Jeffrey was still in bed because I thought it could be him. I checked on the camera and stared at it for a little bit because I thought I saw somebody.
"I turned it off wondering 'what is that?' and laid there, I was too scared to go back upstairs so I turned the camera back on and I saw the figure so I screenshotted it.
"My first instinct was that someone had broken in. I woke up my husband and said that I thought there was someone in the house and the kids were upstairs.
"He went upstairs and checked the whole house but there was nobody there. I showed him the photo of the figure and he was like 'what is that?'.
"I have a dog and if he hears a noise he goes crazy but he was scared. He was pacing back and forth. My dog is a barker, he's very annoying with that so if someone had broken in he would 100% let us know. We thought that was weird.
"I couldn't get back to sleep, I laid there and turned on the TV because I was scared.
"I kept going back to the camera but I couldn't see it anymore so I thought maybe I was seeing things. The next morning I didn't even know what to make of it."
This isn't the first spooky incident the family has encountered since moving into the home in 2020, according to Amanda she regularly receives notifications on her phone that the cameras have detected movement when they are out and they hear strange noises.
All of the strange activity seems to happen on the 21st of each month and footage captured on January 21 2021 shows a door opening without anyone there - while the whole family was out.
Amanda said: "Things have happened here before. The people who lived here before didn't live here for very long but we never found out why.
"We have a laundry room attached to the basement. I was upstairs in the living room on the phone to my mum and alone in the house.
"I got a notification on my phone that there was movement in the laundry room. I checked the camera, I could see the door and a white thing moved across it.
"I thought 'oh my god, there's someone down there'. I went downstairs and there was no one there.
"I'd told my mum that she might need to call 911, I didn't know what to think of it.
"We hear footsteps a lot. My mum was babysitting my children one day and our kitchen sink just turned on.
"You have to pull the lever out to get it to turn on so it's not something that could happen on its own."
For Amanda, this was the first home she had owned so was excited to move in and the spooky activity didn't begin until about one year in.
The 34-year-old says she's a sceptic and didn't believe in ghosts but the images she's seen on the camera have made her "question everything".
Although the family are planning a move to Florida next year, they're considering calling in an expert to find out if there's something in the house that wants to harm them.
Amanda said: "It's the first house that I've ever owned so it was exciting and it was perfect for our family. It's in a small neighbourhood, it's a very good, rural area.
"I've never been a ghost believer but we've had things happen that make us question it.
"That picture is terrifying. Thinking there's something like that in your house you question everything.
"You hear footsteps or something moving and think 'could it be that?'.
"When we first moved in nothing happened, it wasn't until we'd been living here for almost a full year and something would happen and we would say it was nothing.
"We're confused, we just question everything when we hear stuff now. It's not so much living in fear, it's just questioning everything.
"Could it be real? I don't know how to explain these things, I don't know how to explain the photos and videos, I just have proof now.
"It seems like the 21st is the day that things happen. If things keep escalating, then we'll look into it more and maybe get an expert in.
"If it's not causing any harm then we'll live with it until we're able to move."
