Rio Ferdinand has again urged Harry Maguire to leave Manchester United for the sake of his own career.
The United captain has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and has been linked with moves away from the club. However, reports claim the 29-year-old wants to stay and fight for his place under Erik ten Hag.
United need sales to bolster Ten Hag's transfer budget as the takeover saga drags. Maguire, as fourth-choice centre-back, is a player they would naturally listen to offer for.
With England boss Gareth Southgate also outlining the need for Maguire to play regularly, Ferdinand has urged the defender to leave. He thinks staying would be a 'terrible' move.
Ferdinand told FIVE: “If Harry Maguire doesn’t go, I think it’s a terrible move from him. He has to be wanting to get out there and play.
“Before the season started I would have said Newcastle would take him in a heartbeat. I’d be surprised if Newcastle took him now.”
On Maguire's game-time, Southgate said: “Harry is captain of an incredible football club so that is a difficult situation, he will obviously be frustrated not to play as much as he would like but I think he has handled that really well, he has publicly talked well about supporting the team.
“It is clear, really. I think Harry and Kalvin are the two who have played the least in terms of guys in this squad this season but we have gone with them because in these two positions we think they are still ahead of others that might have played more.
“But it is then hard when that competition gets more even and you are not playing regularly to see their form, see their fitness so that is the challenge for everybody.”
