Martina Navratilova has announced her diagnosis for two forms of cancer.
The tennis legend, 66, has been diagnosed with throat and breast cancer, leading to her taking time off from punditry duties for the upcoming Australian Open.
Treatment will begin later this month after Navratilova underwent successful radiation therapy for breast cancer in 2010.
“This double whammy is serious but still fixable,” Navratilova is quoted by The Times as saying.
“I’m hoping for a favourable outcome. It’s going to stink for a while but I’ll fight with all I have got.”
Navrtilova, who was born in Prague but lives in Florida, was reportedly tested in early November after finding an enlarged lymph node in her neck. During testing, a suspicious form in her breast was discovered.
A spokesperson confirmed both cancers have been caught in their early stages.
Stage one throat cancer has approximately a 90 per-cent survival rate for adults living past five years after a diagnosis.
No tennis player has won as many as Navratilova’s nine Wimbledon titles among a total of 59 Grand Slams across doubles and singles championships.
