Tennessee Titans worked out TE, 2 WRs among 5 players on Friday

The Tennessee Titans were busy taking a look at some free-agent pass-catchers on Friday, but that wasn’t the only position they checked out.

Earlier in the day, Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 reported that the Titans had worked out a pair of linebackers in Jordan Evans and Andre Smith.

Here’s some background on each from our earlier article:

A former sixth-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2017, Evans appeared in 65 games over five seasons with Cincy, starting nine of them. He has totaled 127 tackles (six for loss), 3.5 sacks and seven passes defensed.

Smith was a seventh-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2018 and has played in 46 games (no starts) over four seasons, two with the Panthers and two with the Buffalo Bills. The North Carolina product has recorded 27 tackles and forced and recovered one fumble.

Neither Evans nor Smith have suited up in a game this season.

Tennessee’s interest in a linebacker likely has to do with the current status of Zach Cunningham, who reinjured his elbow in Week 9 and will miss another game.

The position the Titans really should be looking at the most is wide receiver, and they did exactly that on Friday by bringing in two wideouts and one former wideout-turned-tight-end.

But before you get excited, just know there’s nothing to get excited about with this group. Here’s who worked out:

TE J.J. Arcega-Whiteside

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

After the former second-round pick proved to be a bust at wide receiver in Philly, he switched positions to tight end, but that still didn’t yield results.

Whiteside was traded from Philly to Seattle this offseason, and interestingly enough former Titans defensive back Ugo Amadi was the return. Arcega-Whiteside spent time on the Seahawks’ practice squad before being cut earlier this month.

For his career, Arcega-Whiteside has appeared in 40 games (seven starts) and has just 16 catches for 290 yards and one touchdown. Most of that production came in his rookie year.

WR Kawaan Baker

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

A former seventh-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2021, Baker has never played an offensive snap over the two games he’s appeared in.

Baker was released by the Saints in October after serving a six-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

He was most recently on the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad but didn’t last a month.

WR Deon Cain

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

A former sixth-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, Cain has played in 15 games (six starts) over his career, tallying nine catches for 124 scoreless yards.

The 26-year-old hasn’t appeared in a game since 2020 when he was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Just like the others on this list, Cain is a practice squad body at best.
