Tennessee Titans will need to make exception to rule to keep Malik Willis

The Tennessee Titans will need to make an exception to their normal rule if they are to keep hold of Malik Willis just a year after he was drafted.

Willis was a third-round pick for the Titans in the 2022 NFL Draft last year, and played eight games in his debut season in Tennessee. The quarterback achieved 276 total passing yards and did not throw a passing touchdown.

Ryan Tannehill is currently the starting QB for the Titans, although it appears they may have a plan in place for the future. Quarterback Will Levis was drafted last month from Kentucky, trading up eight spots to take him as the second pick in the second round.

That means that the Titans will now have three quarterbacks in the QB room. And according to a Fox Sports report, it may not be that way for long.

It’s been stated that now Levis has been drafted, and Tannehill is the starting QB, Willis is now the “odd man out”. While no suggestions have been made that Willis could be traded, Tennessee do not usually keep three quarterbacks on their roster.

The Titans trading up to get Levis appears a possible indication that they see the 23-year-old as a future starting QB and successor to Tannehill.

As a result, it would mean that in order for Willis to remain at the Nissan Stadium, the Titans would need to make an exception to their 'two QBs only’ rule. While it’s not a requirement under NFL rules, it’s one that the Titans have stuck to in each of the last four seasons under head coach Mike Vrabel.

In total, the Titans drafted seven players in the 2023 Draft, including Levis in the second round. He was joined by guard Peter Skoronski, running back Tyjae Spears, tight end Josh White, offensive tackle Jaelyn Duncan and wide receiver Colton Dowell.

The Titans have been confirmed as one of the NFL teams who will be taking part in the 2023 International Series. It was announced on Wednesday that Tennessee will take on the Baltimore Ravens at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on October 15 in Week Six of the 2023 regular season.
