A Tennessee gynecologist has been arrested on serious charges related to his medical practice in Memphis. Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, 44, is facing allegations of enticing patients to engage in illegal sexual activity, adulteration of medical devices, misbranding of medical devices, and health care fraud.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Memphis revealed that Kumar is accused of conducting unnecessary medical procedures on patients using re-used medical devices that were held under unsanitary conditions. The charges also include claims that Kumar did not inform patients about the re-use of these devices and falsely billed Medicare and Medicaid for the procedures.
According to court records, the alleged incidents took place between September 2019 and June 2024. Kumar is said to have sexually abused women by performing unnecessary procedures with unsanitary devices that should have been disposed of or properly reprocessed.
Authorities highlighted that Kumar was the top-paid provider in Tennessee for Medicare and Medicaid for hysteroscopy biopsies, a procedure that allows doctors to examine the uterus. The U.S. Attorney's Office expressed concerns that there may be more patients who have been impacted by Kumar's actions.
In a statement, Acting U.S. Attorney Fondren described Kumar as a predator who exploited his position as a medical professional for personal gain. The allegations suggest that Kumar used his medical examinations as a guise to endanger patients and enrich himself.
The case against Dr. Sanjeev Kumar is ongoing, and it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will unfold as more details emerge regarding the alleged misconduct in his medical practice.
