Ten candidates are running in the Democratic Party primary election for Texas’ 32nd Congressional District on March 5, 2024. Julie Johnson (D) and Brian Williams (D) lead in endorsements and fundraising. The Dallas Morning News described the two as “pulling away from the pack in the scramble for Rep. Colin Allred’s Dallas-based congressional seat.”
Johnson is an attorney who has served in the state House since 2019. She says her policy priorities are abortion, healthcare, firearms regulations, and education. Johnson’s endorsers include the American Federation of Teachers, EMILY’s List, and the Texas State Fraternal Order of Police. As of December 19, 2023, Johnson had reported $720,000 in fundraising.
Williams, a trauma surgeon, became involved in political activism after leading the surgical team responsible for treating victims of the July 2016 shooting attack on Dallas police. Williams says he will bring his experience as a trauma surgeon to Congress and listed firearms, healthcare, and abortion as policy priorities. His endorsers include Serve America, VoteVets, and Healthcare for Action. As of December 19, 2023, Williams had reported $720,000 in fundraising.
Also running in the primary are Callie Butcher (D), Kevin Felder (D), Zachariah Manning (D), and Justin Moore (D).
If no candidate wins more than 50% of the vote in the March 5 primary, the top two finishers will advance to a May 28 primary runoff.
As of December 19, 2023, The Cook Political Report, Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales, and Larry J. Sabato’s Crystal Ball all rated the general election as Solid/Safe Democratic. A Daily Kos analysis of the district following the 2020 round of redistricting found that Joe Biden (D) received 65.7% of the 2020 presidential vote in the new 32nd District and Donald Trump (R) received 32.7%.
Incumbent Colin Allred (D), first elected in 2018, is running for U.S. Senate rather than seeking re-election.
