Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Puffy Cloud: Which foam mattress is best for your aches and pains?

Tempur-Pedic Tempur Cloud vs Puffy Cloud mattress.

If you’re in the market for a memory foam mattress to soothe your aches and pains, Tempur-Pedic and Puffy are two of the brands that should be on your radar. In this Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Puffy Cloud comparison piece, we’ll look at these two mattresses and help you decide which will best suit your sleep style and budget.

Tempur-Pedic is one of the best mattress brands for providing outstanding pressure relief. Although the Tempur-Cloud is its entry level model, it still boasts the same high-quality Tempur foams and build — but at a fraction of the price. Tempur-Pedic has extended its Memorial Day discounts until today, which means if you’re quick you can still buy a queen size Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud for $1,399.70 (was $1,999).

The Puffy Cloud is also an all-foam mattress that’s particularly suited to side sleepers, thanks to its cushioning comfort and a distinctive memory foam ‘hug’. A typically generous Puffy sale means you can pick up a queen size Puffy Cloud for $1,049 (was $2,399). Price aside, which bed is best for achy joints? Find out in this Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Puffy Cloud comparison. Let’s get started.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Puffy Cloud mattress: Specs

We’ve reviewed the Tempur-Cloud in full and you can read our Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud mattress review for full testing data, and to find out why we rate it as one of the best mattresses for side sleepers. Although we haven’t reviewed the Puffy Cloud in full yet, you can read more about it in our Is the Puffy mattress any good article. See below for how the essential specs for both beds compare.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Puffy Cloud mattress: Price & trial

  • When on sale, the Tempur-Cloud is usually discounted by 30%
  • Generous Puffy sales range between $750 - $1350 off the price of a mattress
  • The Puffy comes with a lifetime warranty, the Tempur-Pedic offers 10 years

Tempur-Pedic mattress sales generally crop up monthly, with 30% off the Tempur-Cloud being the norm. The Tempur-Cloud is the brand’s entry level mattress, but  is still a premium product. Expect to pay $1,399 for a queen, with a 10-year warranty and 90-night trial thrown in. Although 90 nights is three times the recommended length of time it takes your body to get used to a mattress, it’s still pretty short compared to the brand’s main rivals. Saatva, for instance offer a 365-night trial, lifetime warranty and free white glove shipping. The Tempur-Cloud will only ship to your door via UPS.

As with the Tempur-Cloud, the Puffy Cloud is regularly discounted - and these discounts are extremely generous. We’ve seen between $750 and $1,350 (and $2,700 off the Split King size) off the Puffy, meaning a queen size mattress can be as low as $1,049 (MSRP $2,399), which is the current offer.

So, whilst the Puffy is more expensive at full MSRP, the fact that it’s nearly always discounted means you should be able to pick it up for less than the Tempur-Pedic. You’ll also get a 101-night trial with the Puffy, along with a lifetime warranty and free shipping to your door.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Puffy Cloud: Materials & Design

  • The Tempur-Pedic is a 10” mattress with four layers
  • The Puffy is a 10” mattress with five layers
  • Both mattresses are an all-foam construction

Like the best memory foam mattresses, the Tempur-Cloud and Puffy Cloud are made with an all-foam construction. But, of course, they are different under the covers. Let’s look closer.

The Tempur-Cloud starts with a 360 degree stretch cover, designed to be breathable and to wick away sweat (although our testers found it slept warm). Underneath is a comfort layer of Tempur memory foam to deliver the famous body-hugging feel and a slow release to pressure. Next up is a firmer support layer of Tempur foam to contour to your body in any sleeping position, helping to further relieve pressure points. The mattress is finished off with a base layer of high-density polyfoam for stability and structure. It’s a fairly basic design, but you’re essentially paying for the premium Tempur foams.

The Puffy Cloud is also an all-foam mattress. The mattress starts with a polyester blend soft cover that’s hypoallergenic and stain-resistant (you can also zip it off to wash it). Underneath the cover is Puffy’s ‘Cooling Cloud’ gel memory foam layer for pressure relief, followed by a transition layer of responsive polyfoam to manage temperature.

The base layer is a 6” layer of high-density foam to stabilize the mattress, rounded off by a grip base cover to prevent the mattress from sliding about. All the foams in the Puffy are Certi-PUR US certified, meaning they’re free from harmful chemicals and heavy metals, as well as being produced without certain toxic materials.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Puffy Cloud: Comfort & Support

  • Puffy rates the Cloud as 6-8/10 for firmness, making it a medium-firm
  •  The Tempur-Pedic is also a medium firm mattress that rates at 6.5/10
  • Both mattresses are particularly suited for side sleepers

The Tempur-Cloud is one of our recommended best mattresses for side sleepers, with these sleepers being particularly well supported by the plush contouring of the mattress, which offers exceptional pressure relief around the shoulders and hips. Like many of the best mattresses for back pain, it eases aches and pains quickly but our testers did find it hard to move around on. Once you’re lying in a position, the mattress keeps you in position, with the top layer giving a lot of sinkage. Our testers didn’t find it supportive enough for back or side sleeping.

The Puffy Cloud is an all-foam mattress that offers fantastic pressure relief. It’s approved by the American Chiropractic Association and back and side sleepers should enjoy the contouring support, which will help to alleviate aches and pains. This is definitely a mattress for those who enjoy the ‘hug’ of memory foam, as you will sink into it. Because of this design, strict stomach sleepers and those weighing more than 230lbs will probably find it too soft to support their hips properly.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Puffy Cloud mattress: Temperature Regulation

  • Our lead tester found the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud retained some heat
  • The Puffy has gel-infused memory foam for additional cooling
  • Both are all-foam models which have less airflow than hybrid mattresses

All-foam mattresses and memory foam are notorious for trapping heat, so neither of these mattresses are the best choice if you’re a hot sleeper. If you do struggle to keep cool at night, we’d recommend investing in one of our best cooling mattress selection instead.

The Tempur-Cloud was tested in a basement bedroom that was cooler than the rest of the house, with outside temperatures of 30-60F through the testing period. Despite this, our hotter sleepers struggled to stay cool on the mattress, with some waking up in the night from overheating. Temperature regulation is poor on this mattress, with the sinkage of the foam trapping a fair amount of heat.

The Puffy Cloud is an all-foam mattress, so it has less overall airflow than a hybrid. However, Puffy have added features to help keep the mattress from overheating. Directly underneath the cover is a layer of gel-infused memory foam designed to draw heat away from the body, followed by another layer of humidity-resistant foam that is designed to promote airflow. We haven’t tested this mattress ourselves but would expect these features to help regulate temperature a little. However, we still wouldn’t recommend either of these options to a hot sleeper.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud vs Puffy Cloud mattress: Which should you buy?

Buy the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud if...

✅   You sleep on your side: The Tempur material offers great pressure relief around the shoulders and hips when sleeping on the side, allowing sleepers to sink into the foam and feel supported.

✅  You're a restless sleeper: The Tempur-Cloud is a great choice for those sharing their bed with a restless partner. The sinkage from the top layer means that you’ll find it difficult to change position, thus minimizing motion transfer.

✅   You want a proper memory foam ‘hug’: Sinkage on the top layer of the Tempur-Cloud is pronounced, meaning you will sink into the mattress, benefiting from superior contouring and pressure relief.

Buy the Puffy Cloud if...

✅   You sleep on your side or back: Again, the Puffy Cloud is particularly suited to side sleepers, with plenty of deep pressure relief around the shoulders and hips. But it’s also suited to back sleepers who like a plush finish, providing decent spinal alignment to support the lumbar region.

✅   You're a restless sleeper: As with the Tempur-Cloud ,the Puffy Cloud will isolate movement and help prevent you being disturbed at night by a partner’s tossing and turning.

✅   You sleep warm: Neither beds will provide enough cooling for very hot sleepers but if you sleep warm and your heart is set on memory foam, the Puffy has more features to help regulate heat and stop you overheating.
