A temporary Post Office service will begin in Closeburn this week.
The Matt Williamson & Sons store in the village’s industrial estate will open it on Wednesday June 8 and will operate every Wednesday from 2.30-4.30pm.
The move comes after the Post Office announced the previous postmaster at the village shop had resigned and the location closed on April 7.
Steven Simpson, Post Office network provision lead, said: “We are pleased to be restoring service to Closeburn at the established Matt Williamson & Sons store.
“We thank the postmaster for Galloway Street, Dumfries for agreeing to run temporary services for Closeburn and Thornhill whilst we continue to look for permanent solutions.”
The closure in Closeburn came on the heels of the Post Office in Thornhill shutting and being replaced by a part-time service in the local library.
The Post Office said it is continuing to look for a permanent solution.
Emma Harper, SNP MSP for South Scotland, said: “The news today that services are to be restored, albeit on a temporary basis, is extremely welcome.
“Today’s news is a welcome step forward.
“However, I encourage the Post Office to continue to keep this situation under review, with a view to finding a sustainable long term solution to secure future Post Office services for my constituents in and around Closeburn.”
And Labour MSP Colin Smyth said: “I welcome the move from Post Office to run a temporary service in Closeburn but I will be urging them to continue to look for a long term, permanent solution for both Closeburn and Thornhill.
“Having a Post Office in the community is vital for so many of my constituents, particularly those who are older or people who can’t travel easily.
“Sadly, right across Dumfries and Galloway we have seen closure after closure of Post Offices and complete inaction by the UK Government to keep them open.
Meanwhile the opening hours for Thornhill’s service will change on June 6 to Monday and Wednesday 11am-2pm and Friday 11am-1pm.
