Temple Bar restaurant has windows smashed in during early morning robbery

A city centre restaurant was robbed early this morning after thieves smashed through a window to gain access to the premises.

The Saucy Cow, a plant based restaurant located in Temple Bar, was targeted by burglars at approximately 6am this morning. The restaurant itself remained largely intact as the money was taken directly from the cash register.

Roisin Lawlor, manager of The Saucy Cow, lives just around the corner and received a notification of the break in from her alarm company. She said this is the third time the restaurant’s glass panels have been kicked in since May, although robbers have not previously gained access to the building.

She told Dublin Live: “I got the phone call from the alarm company and I stupidly ran around there at around 6:23 am. Thankfully they were already gone because I don’t know what my game plan was for when they arrived.”

Roisin was told by Gardai that the restaurant likely survived further damage thanks to the money in the register. The premises itself is closed for this week over the Christmas break, but the news comes as a blow to staff during an already difficult year.

The Saucy Cow was forced to close its second premises in Eatyard, Glasnevin earlier this year due to impossible costs. The eatery is popular due to its wide range of vegan options and plant-based ingredients.

Roisin added: “We are busier than ever since we closed Eatyard but it’s still very difficult to make a profit with the cost of absolutely everything going up. We’re keeping a positive mind set about it- we know the next few months will be tough but we will put the head down and look forward to making it to the summer season.”

Although the shop floor was heavily littered by the glass, the restaurant was quickly secured. The front door itself was replaced by 9am thanks to the emergency repairs shop Rathmines Glass.

A Garda spokesperson said of the incident: “Gardaí are investigating a burglary that occurred at a business premises at Crane Lane, Pearse Street, Dublin 2 on the 28th December 2022 at approximately 06:00 am.”

They added: “A sum of cash and property was taken from the premises. No arrests have been made at this time and investigations are ongoing.”
