Temperatures to reach 20°C in Wales this weekend - but not for long

Temperatures are set to reach 20°C in Wales this weekend, making it slightly warmer than Barcelona and Majorca on Saturday. After weeks of rain and lower than average temperatures there will be a glimpse of summer on Saturday.

The Met Office forecast for Wales on Saturday says that any cloud in the east will break up during the morning to "leave plenty of prolonged sunshine during the afternoon". The forecast adds: "Light winds helping it feel warm. Becoming cloudier in the northwest later. Maximum temperature 20°C."

BBC Weather forecaster Simon King says: "Imagine you'll be smelling BBQ's and cut grass across the neighbourhood tomorrow (Saturday)."

But make the most of it as cloud will increase on Sunday in Wales with rain arriving from the west later. The forecast says that it will turn showery on Monday, but will feel warm, adding: "Drier with lighter winds on Tuesday, although feeling a little cooler."

The UK long-range forecast for Tuesday, May 16, to Thursday, May 25, says that ridge of high pressure will build to the west of the UK before spreading to other parts. It adds: "However an Atlantic frontal system will bring cloudier skies and sporadic rain, especially to northern and some western areas at first. Pressure will then probably remain relatively high across southern and central parts of the UK for much of the rest of the period, although daytime showers are likely.

"There is a chance of some of these showers turning heavy at times. Temperatures generally unremarkable for many areas and whilst it feels warm enough in sunnier periods, some eastern coastal areas could be rather cool at times, especially with an onshore breeze."
