Temperatures could plummet to -3C in Manchester later this week as Met Office issues ice warning

Temperatures could plummet to a chilly -3C in Greater Manchester this week as the Met Office issues an ice warning for parts of the UK. Most of the region will experience lows in the minus figures, however it could feel even colder than that.

According to the Met Office, Wednesday's (December 7) conditions for Greater Manchester are set to be dry and mostly cloudy throughout the day, with a high temperature of 4C, dropping to -2C in the early hours of Thursday (December 8).

Throughout Thursday, temperatures will peak at 1C at around midday, before dropping again at around 6pm, when temperatures will hit -1C, however, the Met Office says it will feel more like -4C.

There are chances of snow too on Thursday evening from around 9pm, where it will feel more like -5C, continuing to around midnight on Friday (December 9). Friday will be a foggy start, with morning temperatures of around -3C, warming to a peak of 0C at around midday.

Into the weekend, Saturday is predicted to be cloudy, with temperatures no higher than 1C, and similar again on Sunday. The temperatures, which are dropping across the country, has prompted the Met Office to issue a yellow warning for ice, covering parts of north west England.

The warning will also cover parts of Northern Ireland and Wales, with the major areas currently covered including Cheshire West and Chester, Merseyside, County Armagh, County Down, Cardiff, and Swansea. It's the first significant weather warning from the Met Office, alongside the UKHSA level 3 warning for health risks in the cold weather, to be implemented following predictions that some areas in the country could see snow from this week into next.

It means that in those areas currently covered by the yellow warning, which is in place between midnight on Wednesday and 6pm on Thursday, there will be a risk of injury from slips and falls on icy surfaces and the chance that roads and public transport services may be delayed by the icy conditions.

The UKHSA level 3 warning which covers Greater Manchester and the rest of England means there is an increased risk to health as temperatures begin to plummet to close to below freezing.
