Teletubbies fans say ‘eh-oh!’ to next generation as Sun Baby announces pregnancy

The child star known to many as the Teletubbies Sun Baby has announced she is pregnant with her first child.

Jess Smith, who is now in her late twenties, appeared in every episode of the beloved BBC children’s show between 1997 to 2003.

Sharing her news, Smith — who is in a long-term relationship with partner Ricky Latham — took to Instagram on Wednesday where she posted an image of her ultrasound scan.

She wrote alongside it: “When two becomes three”.

Smith was then inundated with congratulatory messages from friends and social media followers, who commented on her having her “own Sun Baby”.

One wrote below the post: “The Teletubbies baby is having a baby.”

“The Teletubbies Sun Baby is having her own Sun Baby,” another added.

A third shared: “Teletubbie baby. Congratulations! Nursery theme idea (you are my sunshine)”.

The Teletubbies quickly became a pop culture phenomenon when the show debuted in 1997.

Aside from its commercial success, it also won multiple Bafta awards during its original run.

Previously, Smith said she landed her role by chance after her mother met one of the show’s producers in hospital.

She told the BBC in 2015: “I was being weighed at the hospital.

“My mum took me and it just happened to be the same time that the producer of the old series had come in and wanted the hospital to get in contact with them if they’d seen any smiley babies.”

Smith explained how her father would sit behind the cameras, playing with toys and cars in a bid to make her giggle — which became synonymous with the show.
