A disturbing incident unfolded earlier this month in downtown Los Angeles when a gang of teenagers on bicycles violently assaulted a man in traffic. The victim, identified as Shailoobek Bazarbai Uulu, was driving his car and stopped at a red light when he encountered a group of approximately 30 teens on bikes.
As the light turned green, Uulu attempted to pass the group, prompting one of the teens to throw a water bottle into his vehicle. This led Uulu to pull over and exit his car, only to be surrounded and attacked by the teens. The situation quickly escalated, with some of the teens physically assaulting Uulu while others vandalized his vehicle.
The teens were seen breaking windows, jumping on the hood of the car, and rummaging through the interior. They stole Uulu's wallet, cash, and personal documents, leaving him with a broken leg and multiple lacerations.
Uulu, who had sought asylum in the U.S. after living in Russia for most of his life, expressed shock at the cruelty of the teens and regretted his decision to exit the vehicle. Many crucial documents needed for his asylum process were stolen during the attack.
Footage of the incident captured bystanders watching in horror, with some filming the assault. Despite the chaos, a few individuals eventually intervened to help Uulu to safety and called the police.
Uulu emphasized that he did not provoke the attack, although one of the teens claimed he had cut off the bikers in traffic. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the assault, and Uulu reported that the perpetrators attempted to use his stolen bank cards.
The incident has raised concerns about public safety in Los Angeles, especially as the city prepares to host the 2028 summer Olympic games. Despite the recent acceptance of the Olympic torch from Paris, issues such as crime and homelessness continue to plague the city.
