Teenager taken to hospital after being hit by car in Wallsend

A 15-year-old was taken to hospital after being hit by a car in North Tyneside.

Emergency crews attended the incident which occurred on a slip road junction of the Coast Road and Churchill Street, Willington Square in Wallsend just after 3pm. A teenager was found to have been knocked over and a 48-year-old driver remained at the scene to assist with investigations.

The road was subsequently closed as Northumbria Police officers assessed the scene.

A spokesperson for the Force said: "Police received a report of a collision on Churchill Street, Wallsend on Wednesday, April 6. At around 3.20pm officers attended the scene where a car and a pedestrian had collided.

"Thankfully they also stated that nobody suffered serious injuries in the collision. A 15 year-old has been taken to hospital with minor injuries. The 48-year old driver remained and the scene and is helping police with enquiries."

The North East Ambulance Service was also in attendance where one ambulance crew was dispatched to the scene. A NEAS spokesperson said:

"We received a call at 3.14pm to reports of a road traffic incident off Gibson Street, Wallsend. We dispatched one ambulance crew and transported a teenage patient to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (NSECH) for further treatment."

The road is currently closed to allow for recovery of the vehicle and diversions are in place.
