Teenager still critical in hospital after Bishopston crash which killed two young people

A teenage girl is still in hospital fighting for her life, eight days after she was in a car crash which killed two other young people. Tributes have been paid to Kaitlyn Davies and Ben Rogers, both 19, who sadly died when the car they were travelling in crashed into a petrol station in Bishopston, Swansea, last Tuesday, May 31.

At the time, two other people travelling in the car, a 17-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy, were rushed to hospital for emergency care and police have now confirmed that the pair, who have not been named publicly, remain in hospital.

The latest update from South Wales Police confirms that no-one has been arrested in relation to the incident and that the investigation into what happened in the horror crash is "ongoing". Officers have also confirmed that the 17-year-old girl in the crash is in a "critical condition" in hospital, whilst the 17-year-old boy is in hospital with "non life-threatening injuries". A spokesperson for South Wales Police told WalesOnline: "No arrests have been made at this time. The 17-year-old girl remains in a critical condition and the 17-year-old boy remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. [The] investigation is ongoing."

The statement comes a week after officers confirmed that two people had died in the crash. An initial statement from South Wales Police explained: "South Wales Police is investigating a road traffic collision which occurred at 11.15pm last night [Tuesday, May 31] at Northway Garage, Bishopston, Swansea. The single vehicle collision involved a red Alfa Romeo Mito containing four occupants.

"A 19-year-old man from Landore and a 19-year-old woman from Blaenymaes were declared deceased at the scene. A 17-year-old girl from Penlan was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries and a 17-year-old boy from Birchgrove was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"Families are being supported by specially trained officers. The road was closed for a number of hours whilst investigation work was carried out. Anyone who may be able to assist officers in this investigation is asked to contact South Wales Police quoting 2200 182 514." You can read more stories about Swansea here.

A statement from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service added: "On Tuesday, 31/05/2022 at 11:15pm, crews from Morriston and Reynoldston attended a road traffic collision, involving one vehicle, at Northway Garage, Bishopston, Swansea.

"Tragically, two people died at the incident. A further two casualties were conveyed to hospital. Firefighters made the scene safe and assisted the Ambulance Service at the scene. The Fire Service left the incident with the Police at 03:06am."

Two days after the crash, Bishopston Community Council, Bishopston Councillor Lyndon Jones and members of the community gathered to pay their respects to the two people who died in the crash and to offer their thoughts for the two teenagers in hospital, and their families. A minute's silence was held across Murton and Bishopston, led by local vicar, the Reverend Canon Peter Brooks, while there was also a poignant round of applause for the emergency services who attended the incident and for their work during the pandemic. Members of the community also placed bouquets of flowers at the crash site. You can read more about this in a previous article here.

Later, the devastated families of those who died shared beautiful tribute messages to their lost loved ones. Paying tribute to Kaitlyn, who was from Blaenymaes, Swansea, her family said: "Kaitlyn, our bright, bubbly, kind, caring girl, your smile was brighter than the sun and lit up every room you entered.

"To say we are devastated doesn’t come close, you were so loved by everyone you met. We were there for your entire life and now the memories we made will have to last us the rest of ours. We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love we have been shown but now ask that our privacy be respected."

The family of Ben Rogers, from Bonymaen in Swansea, said: "Ben was an amazing, clever, chatty and witty young man. He always had a smile on his face which always lit up the room when he entered. He was such a loving, caring person who had time to talk to anyone who’d listen which explains why he had so many friends.

"He would always offer support to anyone who needed it. It would be fair to say he lived life flat out and squeezed every ounce of enjoyment out of it that was possible. The loss of Ben has had a profound effect on us all and if we’re honest, we are all still numb with shock as the gravity of what has happened hasn’t truly sunk in.

"Ben was our son, and he was deeply loved by all the family and will be missed beyond any words could express. A piece of all our hearts is broken but we will do our best to keep his memory alive forever. We would like to thank everyone for all their kind words of love and support which are all gratefully received. Finally, we’d like to thank all the emergency services and members of public at scene who did their very best under what must have been difficult circumstances." You can read the full tributes here.
