Teenager pleads guilty to murder over shooting death of Canberra man Glenn Walewicz

A teenager has pleaded guilty to murder over the shooting death of Canberra man Glenn Walewicz in June 2021.

Mr Walewicz, 48, was shot once at the door of his Phillip unit, as several people allegedly tried to force their way into his home.

The 18-year-old's identity cannot be revealed as he was aged 17 at the time of the murder.

But the ACT Children's Court heard he fired the shot that killed Mr Walewicz.

Another man, Gary Taylor, 24, previously pleaded guilty to murder for his role in the killing.

The teenager, Taylor and a 19-year-old man, who was an accessory, will be sentenced in the ACT Supreme Court in coming months.

Another 19-year-old man and Nicole Williams, 38, will face trial for allegedly planning the home invasion.

Case of mistaken identity: prosecutors

Prosecutors had told the court Mr Walewicz was not the group's intended target, but he was shot in a case of mistaken identity.

They alleged Ms Williams orchestrated the home invasion to obtain drugs and cash from two people who police said were known drug dealers.

Mr Walewicz was not involved in Canberra's drug scene, but the group allegedly mistakenly went to his home after knocking on the doors of at least two other units.

Police said CCTV recorded the shooting and the group feeling to a waiting car.

Ms Williams's lawyer has argued her client was wrongly accused of planning and directing the attack.

Evidence included rap lyrics found on phone

Police uncovered rap lyrics on the 18-year-old's phone that included slang terms like "dot" and "stick", which are believed to refer to a gun, as well as "hit a lick", which police said meant making a lot of money in a short time.

"What's popping just put your mans in a coffin," the lyrics read.

"They told me to hit that lick instead it was a hit n pop … I schemed and leaned and dropped some blood."

Police took more than a year to make the first arrest after carrying out a painstaking investigation.
