Teenager faces children's court charged over death of 12-year-old boy following Towradgi crash

A teenager charged over the death of a 12-year-old following a car crash in the New South Wales Illawarra will remain behind bars for at least six weeks following his first appearance in the Children's Court.

The 17-year-old was arrested at Goulburn Police Station on Friday night following an investigation into the Bellambi boy's death.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, died at Wollongong Hospital after emergency services were called to a home at Balgownie early last Tuesday morning.

Police allege his death is linked to a crash at Towradgi in the hours prior, where officers claim they found an empty, stolen black Holden Barina hatchback crashed into a traffic control light.

The Illawarra teenager is accused of six offences, including dangerous driving occasioning death, failing to stop and render assistance after a crash and driving without a licence.

Mechanical evidence required

Wearing a green tracksuit, the accused sat quietly during his appearance via video link in the court at Port Kembla on Tuesday.

He was supported by his mother, who appeared on a separate link to watch the closed proceedings.

The teenager's solicitor Rodney Boyd said his client was not making an application for bail and agreed to adjourn the case to allow for more evidence to be collected.

The court was told "a lot of evidence" was required, including of a mechanical nature, which could take "a lot of time" to gather.

The accused is due before the court again at the end of November.
