Teenager dies in e-bike crash after being followed by police

A teenager has died after he crashed into an ambulance while riding an e-bike as police followed him. The 15-year-old boy was riding the e-bike in Salford on Thursday afternoon, June 8, when he crashed into a parked ambulance.

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene within minutes and blocked off the road while serious collision investigators remained at the scene for hours into Thursday evening. Greater Manchester Police confirmed in a statement that officers had been following the teenager on the electric bike as he rode along the streets of Salford. The police stopped following the rider because they couldn’t get through bollards in the road, the MEN reports.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police reads: “At around 2pm today GMP traffic officers began following a boy riding an e-bike along Fitzwarren Street in Salford, onto Lower Seedley Road. Bollards prevented the police vehicle from continuing to follow the e-bike. A short time later a road traffic collision occurred between the e-bike and an ambulance on Langworthy Road. The 15-year-old boy riding the e-bike sadly died.”

The force said it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct which is now leading the investigation. They added: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy.”

It comes two weeks after Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and Harvey Evans, 15, lost their lives while riding an e-bike in Ely in Cardiff. The incident in Ely sparked huge riots overnight with cars set alight and police officers attacked, as some blamed the police for the deaths. South Wales Police admitted officers had been following the boys before the crash, but said only the bike was involved in the fatal incident which had "already occurred" when officers arrived.
