Teenager dead after horror crash as gardai shut Cork road

A teenager has died after a horror crash in Co Cork overnight.

The single-vehicle collision happened at Knockleigh in Belgooly shortly after midnight.

Gardai and emergency services were called to the scene, where a 19-year-old man was pronounced dead.

It’s understood he was the driver and only person in the car.

The teenager’s body has been removed to the mortuary in Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem will be carried out.

The road remains closed this morning as a forensic collision investigation takes place and diversions are in place.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone with camera or dashcam footage from the area at that time to contact them.

In a statement, gardai said: “Gardai at Kinsale are appealing for witnesses following a single car fatal traffic collision on Sunday, February 20, 2022.

“Shortly after midnight, gardai and emergency services were called to the scene of a single car collision on a local road at Knockleigh, Belgooly, Co Cork.

“The driver of the car, a male aged 19 years, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. It’s understood he was the sole occupant of the car.

“His body has since been removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be carried out. The Coroner has been notified.

“The road remains closed to traffic and the site will be examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place.

“Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardai.”
