Teenage passenger dies in hospital after M6 motorway crash

A 19 year old woman was killed and two men seriously injured after a horror collision on the M6 this morning.

Police confirmed a 19-year-old passenger died in hospital after a crash involving three cars and a HGV caused queues of traffic on the M6, near Sandbach. Two men, the driver and another passenger in the car were also seriously injured in the crash.

They remain in hospital. The driver of a HGV, a 27 year old man from Rossendale, Lancashire, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is now in police custody for questioning.

The teenager, who was from the Dudley area of the West Midlands, has not been named, reports the M.E.N

She was a passenger in a Volkswagen Polo. The driver and another passenger in the Polo, two men aged in their 20s, remained in hospital today with what the force described as 'serious injuries'.

The collision - between junctions 16 and 17, northbound at Sandbach, Cheshire - was reported at 5.15pm on Friday night and involved the HGV and Polo, together with a Peugeot 107 and a BMW. No other injuries were reported. In a statement, Cheshire Police said: "Officers are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following a fatal collision on the M6.

"At around 5.15pm on Friday, December 2, officers were called to the M6 between junction 16 to junction 17 northbound at Sandbach following reports of a collision involving a HGV, a Volkswagen Polo, a Peugeot 107 and a BMW.

"A passenger in the Polo, a 19-year-old woman from Dudley, was taken to hospital with serious and life-threatening injuries but, despite best efforts of all involved, has since passed away. The driver and another passenger in the Polo, two men in their 20s, remain in hospital with serious injuries.

"The driver of the HGV, a 27-year-old man from Rossendale, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody assisting police with their enquiries.

"Officers are now appealing for anyone with information or dashcam footage from around the time of the collision to come forward."

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement: "Three cars and a heavy goods vehicle were involved in a collision on the M6 northbound. Two people were trapped in one of the cars. One casualty was assisted out by paramedics after they had been checked over.

"The second casualty was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters using specialist cutting equipment. Occupants of the other vehicles managed to self-extricate and were assessed by firefighters and paramedics. One person was taken to hospital. The crews were in attendance for two hours."

Diversions were put in place and closures remain in the area. although they are expected to be lifted shortly. No further details have been released.
