Two teenagers arrested after girl, 16, stabbed to death in Warrington park

Two teenagers have been arrested after a girl was found with fatal stab wounds in a Cheshire park on Saturday.

Brianna Ghey, 16, from Birchwood in Warrington, was found by members of the public as she lay wounded on a path in Linear Park, Culcheth, at around 3.13pm.

Emergency services attended but she was pronounced dead at the scene, Cheshire Constabulary said.

Police said on Sunday evening that a 15-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, both from the local area, have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

They are currently in custody assisting police with their investigation.

Earlier the force was looking to speak with two people who were seen close to where the body was found, described as a white man and woman, both with dark curly hair, aged in their late teens or early twenties.

On Saturday, the man had been wearing a long dark hooded coat, while the woman wore a distinctive red or purple and black checked blanket-style coat with a long flowing bottoms which could have been a skirt, dress or trousers.

Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Evans said it is” a truly awful attack on a 16-year-old girl, who has sadly lost her very short life”.

“A number of enquiries in relation to this incident are underway and we are doing all that we can to establish the exact circumstances of what has happened.

“At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that the circumstances surrounding Brianna’s death are hate related.

“Patrols have been stepped up in the local area and officers will remain in the Culcheth area to provide reassurance and address any concerns that residents may have.”

Anyone with information that would help the investigation has been urged to contact police. Mr Evans also appealed to people and businesses within the local community to check any CCTV or dash cam footage.

Brianna’s relatives have been told, and a Home Office post-mortem examination is ongoing.

Anyone with information should contact police via the Cheshire Constabulary website or by calling 101, quoting IML 1476832.

Information can also be reported anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
